Mildred Olive Mallery

Mildred Dorsett Mallery died Monday, July 1, 2019 with Bev at her side after a short stay at Laurel’s Peak, Mankato, MN.  

Family interment is on Saturday, August 10, 2019 at 9 am in Nashville Cemetery in Truman.  Memorial service is at 11 am at Zaharia Family Funeral Home in Truman with Penny Ritter officiating.  Visitation one hour prior.  Arrangements are entrusted to Zaharia Family Funeral Home in Truman.  www.ZahariaFamilyFuneral.com

Mildred Olive Dorsett was born December 12, 1925 in Ortley, SD to Sherman and Mamie (Narem) Dorsett.  After attending Northern State College in Aberdeen, SD Mildred taught rural school at the age of 17 having her brother in her 6th grade class. During the war she worked at Brown & Bigelow Defense Plant in St. Paul where she operated a drill press making fuses for rocket bombs. When the war was over she returned to teaching in SD and on June 5, 1946 was married in her parents’ home in Ortley to a young farmer, Sylvester Mallery.  Two daughters, Julaine and Janette were born in SD and their 3rd daughter, Beverly was born after they moved to MN.  After eight years as an at home mom, Mildred worked 7 years at 3M in Fairmont, as well as attending Mankato State where she received her BS and MS degrees. She taught Special Education in Truman and Fairmont for 12 years; She then was the Truman librarian for several years.  Mildred worked as a Nurse Aide both at the Truman Retirement home and for 7 “Snowbird” years in Sky Valley, CA.

Mildred trusted Jesus Christ as her Savior and was baptized as a believer at Huntley Baptist Church. She attended Evangelical Free Church in Fairmont for the 42 years that she lived in Truman, MN before moving to Crystal Seasons in Lake Crystal, MN (2012).

Her volunteer activities included the Truman Historical Museum, election poll worker, bloodmobile and census work.  Mildred’s interests included her accomplished works in pencil, ink and oil artwork, sewing, embroidery, crocheting, quilting, three children’s books, and poems for every occasion as well as her annual Christmas letter in rhyme.

Mildred is survived by her daughters, Jan (Richard) Pettersen of Carmel, IN and Bev Johnson of Lake Crystal, MN; grandsons, Aaron (Jennifer) Pettersen and Nathan Pettersen; great-grandchildren, Isaac, Sara, Luke and John David; brothers, Maurice Dorsett and David (Marilyn) Dorsett.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 49 years, Sylvester (1995); daughter, Julaine (2018) and sister, Inez Halby (2019).


Memorials may be made to KJLY Christian Radio, Truman Historical Museum, Truman Fire Department or Bethel E. Free Church in Fairmont, MN.
