Geneva L. Harris

January 15, 1924 — May 11, 2023

 

Longtime Truman resident, Geneva Harris, 99, born on January 15, 1924 in Dixon, South Dakota, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 11, 2023 at Heartland Senior Living, Parker Oaks Campus, in Winnebago. Memorial services will be held on Monday, May 22, 2023 at 1:30pm at Church of Christ in Truman with Rev. Merrill Davis officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at church. Burial will take place in Westford Cemetery. Condolences may be left at www.zahariafamilyfuneral.com.

Geneva Lois Newsom was born to Bertha (Kolbe) and Frederick Newson on January 15th, 1924, in Dixon, South Dakota. She was the second of four daughters. She spoke fondly of growing up there. Geneva graduated from high school in Gregory, South Dakota. She and her older sister, Marcella attended Teachers’ College in Springfield, South Dakota. Upon graduation the two sisters taught in country schools for a year, then moved to Rapid City where their family was. Geneva started working in a bank in Rapid City. She then met Boyd Harris, from Fairmont, who was an instructor in the Army Air Corps. They were married on June 29th, 1945 in Rapid City. The couple then moved to Minnesota and eventually settled in Truman with their two children.

 Geneva worked for Truman Public Schools until her retirement. She was the secretary for the high school principal. After retiring, Gene and Boyd enjoyed Rv-ing, crafts, and gardening, just to name a few of hobbies. She read her Bible daily and was a member of Truman Church of Christ. Geneva was always ready to help. She will be greatly missed by many.

Geneva is survived by her daughter Pat Wink, son Michael (Judy) Harris, grandchildren Darin (Kate) Wink, Amber (Jeffrey) Hull, Andrew (Michelle) Harris, great-grandchildren Kassidi Hull, Josie Hull, Samuel Wink, Elizabeth Harris, Theodore Harris, Many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband of 77 years, Boyd Harris, sisters Kay VanDiviner, Marcella Knispel, and June Gunther.
