Eugene Alvin Buelow

August 13, 1941 — February 15, 2024

Vernon Center

Eugene Alvin Buelow was 82 when he died peacefully in his home on February 15, 2024.

Eugene was born on August 13, 1941 to Walter and Grace (Karau) Buelow. He was the second oldest of four boys. He was born on a farm in Ceresco Township. He moved to various farms and attended five country schools. Eugene attended four years at Madelia High School.

After finishing school, Eugene began his lifelong career as a farmer. He farmed alongside of his parents and two of his brothers: Dwain and Jerold, remaining at home with his family for the rest of his life. They raised crops and ran a dairy farm for before retiring in 2023.

Eugene was baptized in 1941 at Willow Creek Lutheran Church. In 1956, Eugene was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Lewisville, MN. He was a member of Willow Creek Lutheran Church and supported his church and community by attending dinners and parades and supporting fund raisers.

Eugene was also a lifelong learner. He was an amateur historian with an incredible knowledge of the Civil War. He was also sought out for his knowledge. He is featured as a contributor in several books, assisting several authors who sought him out.

When not farming, Eugene maintained an active social life. Eugene was a social person who loved good conversation. He enjoyed visiting with friends and acquaintances. He loved meeting new and interesting people. He traveled when he could. Eugene also enjoyed hunting with his brother Willard. He loved watching football, especially the Minnesota Vikings.

Eugene was a devoted uncle. When his nieces were young, he was always interested in playing games with them, excelling at trivia games. He was a good sport, letting them call him “Blue Jean” instead of Eugene. He supported them by attending their school, sporting, and musical events. As they grew older, he would attend their life events as he could, always sending cards and gifts on holidays and special occasions. As their families grew, he included their spouses and children, enjoying his role as “Great Uncle Eugene.”

He had an infectious smile and great wit. He will be dearly missed by those he leaves behind: his brother Dwain Buelow, his brother Willard (Linda) Buelow, his brother Jerold Buelow, his nieces Mary (Scott) Brockberg, Kristi Buelow, and Sandy (Daniel) Ramlo, along with his great nieces Jasmine Brockberg, Alexis Brockberg, and Phoenix Ramlo and his great nephew Logan Ramlo. He is preceded in death by his parents Walter and Grace Buelow.

Eugene will be laid to rest on Tuesday, February 20th. Services will be held at Willow Creek Lutheran Church with visitation starting at 9:00 a.m. and the service at 10:30 a.m. Graveside services will follow at St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery South Willow Creek. Lunch will follow the services in the basement of Willow Creek Lutheran Church. Reverend John Bennet will perform the services. Pallbearers will be Scott Brockberg, Daniel Ramlo, Todd Arndt, Troy Arndt, Rick Reinke, and Andy Karau. Zaharia Family Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Let us follow Eugene’s example in life to remain rooted in our families, to know our history, but to never let it prevent us from reaching out to those around us, and to live, truly live, in the present.
