Darlene Mae Brummond was born June 27, 1943, in the Hunte house (currently owned by Dave & Cathy Sorenson) in Truman, the daughter of Lloyd and Lillian (Tenhoff) Matson. She was baptized at the Church of Christ in Truman and later confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Truman. She graduated from Truman High School in 1961 and then enrolled in a six-month secretarial course at Mankato Commercial College. While there she took the Civil Service test and became a U.S. Government employee for 8 years, working in Minneapolis and San Francisco. She became one of the original staff that opened the Social Security Office in Fairmont in 1967 and continued there until 1970, when she became a stay-at-home mom. She worked at Truman Farmers Elevator and Tomlinson Northwest Farm Planners during the years 1973 through 1977. In 1978 she became an employee of Peoples State Bank transferring to the Fairmont office of Profinium Financial in 2003 until retiring after 31 years (for the first time) in 2009. She went back to work for them a few times to help out, finally fully retiring in 2017. In her “retirement years”, she worked part-time for Truman Public Utilities and Tennyson Construction.
On March 21, 1970, she was united in marriage to Kenneth Brummond at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Truman. Kenny and Darlene resided their entire married life in the house Darlene grew up in across the street from Truman Elementary School. This union was blessed with two children – Stephanie Kay and Jason Kenneth. They shared 52 years together as husband and wife.
Darlene was a member of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 115 in Truman, served on the Alter Guild at St. Paul’s Lutheran, was a Truman election judge for many years, and a Board member and treasurer of Truman Historical Association.
Darlene and Kenny enjoyed going to NASCAR races with family and friends in their younger years. Darlene loved watching her children and grandchildren at all events they participated in and seeing her granddaughters and great-granddaughters in their dance recitals. She enjoyed scrapbooking and made several scrapbooks. Her greatest love was her family, and she treasured all the fun times spent with them.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband; children Steph (Jason) McFarland and Jason (Amber) Brummond; grandchildren Mackenzie (Lucas) Freeman, Brian McFarland, Sophia Brummond, and Henry Brummond; and great-grandchildren Lillian, Charlotte, and Theodore Freeman, all of Fairmont; sister-in-law Roxy Brummond of Granada; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
Along with her parents Lloyd and Lillian Matson and stepmother Lulu Kneeland Matson (who raised her from age 8), she was preceded in death by her parents-in-law Carl and Ella (Ritz) Brummond; brothers and sisters-in-law Robert (Margaret) Matson and William (Dorothy) Matson; brothers-in-law Ernest Brummond and James Brummond; sisters-in-law Laura Sheppard, Betty Nowak and Elaine Redmond, two stepbrothers and seven stepsisters.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Truman Historical Association.
