Funeral services for Luella F. Wessel, 99, Truman, MN will be held on Saturday, January 30, 2016 at 11:30 am at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Truman with Rev. Nathan Rusert officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Luella died on Sunday, January 24, 2016 at the Trimont Health Care Center. Visitation will be held for 2 hours prior to the services in the church. Arrangements are entrusted to Zaharia Family Funeral & Cremation Service of Truman. Luella Freda Schultz was born on August 30, 1916 at Wheaton, MN to Emil and Marie (Otto) Schultz. She was baptized on October 16, 1916 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Wheaton. In 1918 her family moved from Wheaton to Truman. She attended school through 8th grade in Truman. She was confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Truman. Luella worked for other people doing housework. On January 22, 1939 Luella was united in marriage to Harold Wessel at St. Paul’s Lutheran. Following their marriage, they farmed near Truman until 1944 when they moved to a farm near Lewisville. In 1954, they moved to a farm near Lakefield, returning to Truman the next year. Homemaking on the farm was Luella’s role for many years. Since Truman became their permanent home, Luella worked for five years as a waitress at the “Chat and Chew Café”, ten years as a cook for St. Paul’s Lutheran School, then returned to the “Chat and Chew Café” until 1980. After retiring she helped Harold keep the windows clean and shiny at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Truman. Luella taught Sunday School for years, sang in the choir for many years and belonged to Esther Circle at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. She enjoyed keeping house, gardening, flowers, crocheting, quilting, playing cards, decorating and hosting many family and friends for reunions, card parties or just having coffee with friends. Luella was instrumental in organizing a weekly senior coffee and lunch held at the former “Tip Top Café”. She enjoyed and was recognized for her willingness to help family and friends. Luella and Harold enjoyed traveling, visiting family and friends in California, Michigan, Florida, Colorado and Arkansas. They also enjoyed trips to New York, Mexico City, Bermuda and Puerto Rico while Harold worked for Aid Association for Lutherans. Luella is survived by two daughters, Carole Harries (Larry), Alpha, MN, Esther Jacobs (David), Wabasha, MN; two sons, David Wessel (Judy), Charles City, IA, Armin Wessel (Renee), Burnsville, NC; 10 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; 10 great, great grandchildren; one brother, Lawrence Schultz, Sherburn, MN; five sisters-in-law; three brothers-in-law as well as many nephews and nieces.
