Grace Stewart

January 14, 1915 — July 6, 2010

Grace Farstad was born in Watauga, SD to Helge and Lena (Moe) Farstad. She attended Watauga Elementary School and McIntosh High School graduating in 1934. Grace continued her education at Northern State College in Aberdeen, SD earning a teacher's certificate. She taught in rural schools in Corson County, SD. In 1938 Grace was united in marriage to Melvin Stewart of Morristown, SD. For a number of years she worked as a bookkeeper for her husband's trucking business. Later she returned to Northern State College and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education in 1971. She then returned to her life's passion and work, teaching in Morristown and McIntosh, SD, retiring in 1987. While living in SD, Grace was a member of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in Morristown, the SD Education Association, the Extension Club and served on the Morristown School Board for many years. After spending 3 winters in Arizona, Grace and Melvin moved to Fairmont and later to Truman, MN. Her husband passed away in 1992. Grace entered Truman Senior Living in 2002. In Truman she was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and Rachel Circle. Grace enjoyed volunteering, sewing, craft projects and attending the activities of her great grandchildren. Grace died on Tuesday, July 6, 2010 at Truman Senior Living. Grace is survived by her daughter, Connie Selnes, Truman; granddaughter, Wendy Selnes, Minneapolis, MN; grandson, Monty Selnes and his wife Tammy, Truman; three great grandsons, Brady, Jordan and Taro; one sister-in-law, Virginia Stewart, Helena, MT; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Melvin; son-in-law, Carol Selnes; one granddaughter; four brothers, Ray, Sig, Arnold, Herb and Edwin; four sisters, Olga, Ethel, Agnes and Clara; one sister-in-law Agnes Miner; two brothers-in-law, Harold Stewart and Don Miner.
