Loren Edward Poppe

Loren Edward Poppe was born in Rutland Township, Martin County, MN to Edward and Mathilda (Lueth) Poppe. He was baptized and confirmed at St. James Lutheran Church in Northrop. Loren attended parochial school at St. James Lutheran School and Fairmont High School. On October 6, 1946, Loren was united in marriage to Marilyn Miller at St. James Lutheran Church in Northrop. He joined the US Army shortly after and was stationed in Japan. Loren was honorably discharged in 1947. He returned to Northrop and worked for Bosshart Construction in Truman. In 1954, Loren purchased Northrop Oil from his uncle Edwin Lueth. He operated Poppe Oil for 50 years and retired after selling the business to his son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Renee Poppe. Loren was a member of St. James Lutheran Church in Northrop where he held a variety of church offices; he was mayor of Northrop for over 20 years; he was a member of the Northrop Fire Department; the Schwieger-Kahler American Legion in Northrop and the Martin County VFW; and he was a Regional Director of the Minnesota Petroleum Association. Loren enjoyed golfing and was a member of Rose Lake Golf Club. Loren and Marilyn spent numerous winter months in Texas. Mr. Poppe died on Sunday, December 27, 2009 at the Fairmont Medical Center. Loren is survived by his wife of 63 years, Marilyn, Fairmont, MN; three sons and two daughters-in-law, David Poppe and his wife, Kathy of San Antonio, TX, Brian Poppe and his wife Renee of Fairmont, Scott Poppe and his special friend, Jane of Fairmont; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; one brother, Eldon Poppe and his wife Pearlette, Fairmont, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Erna and Norma and one brother, Sylvan Poppe. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or the donor's choice.
