Luverne W. Halverson

Luverne Willis Halverson was born on February 19, 1921 in Ventura, Iowa to Lloyd and Linda (Reis) Halverson. He was baptized March 3, 1921 at Ellington Prairie Lutheran Church in Ventura, IA. On April 14, 1935 Herky was confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Truman. He attended grade school in Miller, IA, Dist. 75 in Martin County and St. Paul's Lutheran Parochial School. Herky graduated from Truman High School in 1939. He entered the US Army in 1942 and transferred to the Army Air Corps receiving his wings in October of 1943 as a B-17 Bomber pilot. Herky flew bombing missions from England over Germany. On April 3, 1943 Herky married Arlys Boesch at Grace Lutheran Church in Visalia, CA. Herky returned from the war and farmed near Truman. He drove school bus for 28 years. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Truman where he served various offices; he was a 60 year member of the Oles-Reader-Bosshart American Legion Post 115; he was a member of the Lutheran Laymen's League and was a member of the Truman Kiwanis Club. Herky was an avid bowler, enjoyed playing cards, traveling and going to auctions and flea markets. He loved spending time with his family. Herky died on Saturday evening, February 23, 2008 at Truman Senior Living. Herky is survived by his wife of 64 years, Arlys of Truman; two daughters and sons-in-law, Candace Doerfler and her husband Dr. Warren of Lancaster, CA, Heidi Koeritz and her husband Thomas of Northrop, MN; one son and daughter-in-law, Scott Halverson and his wife Dawn of Truman; four grandchildren, Lindsey, Lance (Kristin), Hayley and Mason; one great grandson, Seth; one brother and sister-in-law, Marlen and Ginger Halverson of Truman; one sister-in-law, Joan Martin of Guthrie, OK; and many nieces and nephews. Herky was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Kenneth. Memorial contributions may be given to Martin Luther High School.
