Herbert George Schaefer

Herbert George John Henry Schaefer was born on December 3, 1921 in Pleasant Prairie Township, Martin County, Minnesota to George and Lydia Zoeller Schaefer. He was baptized on December 18, 1921 and confirmed on October 4, 1936. Herbert attended grade school in District 105 and graduated from Fairmont High School in 1941. On July 27, 1942 he joined the US Army and was discharged on November 7, 1945. Herb served in Northern Africa and throughout Italy during WWII. Herbert married Arlene Becker on January 6, 1946 at St. James Lutheran Church, Northrop. They farmed in Galena, Westford and Nashville Townships until retiring to Truman in November of 1988. Herb was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Truman and was a lifetime member of the Martin County VFW Post 1222 in Fairmont. He held offices in Immanuel Lutheran Church, Galena and St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Truman. Mr. Schaefer died on Tuesday morning, December 25, 2007 at the Minneapolis Veterans Hospital. Herbert is survived by his wife of 61 years, Arlene, Fairmont; two sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Joell Schaefer, Richard and Diane Schaefer, both of Fairmont; two daughters and sons-in-law, Barb and Larye Anderson, Fairmont, Nina and Paul Hesby, Rochester; seven grandchildren, Lori (Jay) Smith, Chad (Shannon) Schaefer, Eric (Jenna Miller) Schaefer, Maggie (Brandon Hassing) Schaefer, Jason (Cassie) Holtz, Christina (Chris) Meyer, Christopher (Kristina Wright-Peterson) Hesby; twelve great grandchildren, Katelyn, Caleb, Connor, Susanna, Christian, Laurel, Hunter, Kaley, Zachery, Whytnie, Savannah and Cameron; one sister, Lorraine Becker, Fairmont; two sisters-in-law, Donna Schaefer, Fairmont, Lila Mae (Vinton) Koeritz, Northrop, MN; one brother-in-law, Erhart Becker, Florida; many cousins, nieces and nephews. Herbert was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, William.
