Alma Luella Weigel

July 2, 1911 — April 9, 2007

Alma Luella Flitter was born on July 2, 1911 on a farm near Gwinner, North Dakota, the fourth of eight children. Shortly thereafter, her family moved to the farming village of Lewisville, MN. Alma attended high school in Mankato, MN. She married Herbert Weigel of Danube, MN during WWII on September 22, 1940. Mrs. Weigel was a bookkeeper in her father's hardware store (later operated by one her brothers) in Lewisville for 30 years. She was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church in Lewisville where she served in many organizations and was the organist for many years. After moving to San Jose, CA in 1960, Alma worked in retail sales for Woolworth's, Brinton's Hardware and Hale's Department Store, among others. Her husband of 63 years worked for Orchard Supply Hardware for 20 years, eventually as Vice President of Store Operations, supervising the managers of all 33 stores that were in the OSH chain at that time. (OSH is now owned by Sears.) Mrs. Weigel was an active member of First Immanuel Lutheran Church in San Jose, CA, singing in the choir until almost 90 years of age. At home she still played favorite hymns on the piano by memory at age 95. Alma was an avid gardener. She and her husband enjoyed leisure travel to most of the western United States, some of the eastern US, parts of Canada, 11 countries in Europe and 6 in South America. Mrs. Weigel is survived by her one son, Charles of Sacramento, CA; sister Lillian Timm of Mankato, MN; brother Elmer Flitter of Sacramento; sisters Violet Nelson of Sacramento and Delores Stephens of Escondido, CA. Other survivors include sisters-in-law Hulda Gilbert of Renville, MN and Elsie Weigel of Danube, MN. There are also 20 remaining nieces and nephews.
