Mildred Harriet Mitchum, 88, of Staples, MN, peacefully passed away into the arms of her Lord at the local Lakewood Health System on August 26th, 2006 surrounded by her two sons. Millie was born October 6, 1917 in Fairmont, MN.
Millie was a loving mother and friend. Her indomitable spirit and strength of character were unforgettable. She was known as a "classy lady?, who had a wonderful sense of fashion and style. Millie's laugh was infectious. She had a passion for gardening; everyone admired her violets and, in bygone years her perfect Jackson & Perkins' roses. Millie was an extraordinary cook. On birthdays and holidays, her family continues her tradition of marvelous recipes, including Millie's famous chocolate angel food cake.
She worked many years for Dayton's Department Stores in Minneapolis, retiring in 1985 from Diamond's, a Dayton affiliate in Scottsdale, AZ. Millie moved back to Minnesota in 1992. Millie was independent and lived alone until her death.
She is survived by two sons, David Lester (Carolyn) of Staples, MN: Robert Lester (Joyce) of Fayetteville, GA.
Four grandchildren: Lisa Finken, Brainerd, MN; Tonya Kjaer, Rice MN; Michelle Fowler, Stockbridge, GA; Rachel Lester, Atlanta, GA.
Seven Great-Grandchildren: Brooke, Nathaniel and Zachary Kjaer of Rice, MN; Nicholas and Emma Finken of Brainerd, MN; Abigail and Joshua Fowler of Stockridge, GA.
Her sister, brother and parents preceded her in death. Her interment and private family service will be held at Horicon Cemetery in Truman, MN. Her son Bob, will officiate. Millie will be laid to rest beside her parents.
