Joseph Martin Rettig was born on September 10th, 1924 in Hankinson, North Dakota to Carl and Mary (Bommersbach) Rettig. He attended school in Hankinson, ND. After school, Joseph worked as a farmhand. He worked for the Soo Line Railroad in Minnesota. Joseph was in the US Army during World War II. On May 9th, 1946 Joseph married Darlene Foss in Granite Falls, MN. Joseph worked for the Stone Quarray in Granite Falls, owned Philippe's Bar in Granite Falls, owned the Green Door Supper Club in Northrop, MN and later worked as a truck driver for Hodgman's for 27years. After retirement he lived outside of Fairmont. Darlene died on December 16th, 1992. Joseph moved to the Immanuel Lutheran Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes in 1997. He was a former member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Fairmont. Joseph enjoyed fishing, singing and playing his harmonica. He loved to spend time with his grandchildren.
Joseph is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Joseph Rettig, Jr. and his wife Carol of Sherburn, MN; two daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia Morrison and husband Scott of Hutchinson, MN and Rebecca Langford and husband Wayne of Amboy, MN; six grandchildren; nine great grandchildren and two step grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one daughter, Jacqueline and one granddaughter, Tammy.
