Funeral services for Herbert E. Weigel, 88 of San Jose, California were held at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 25, 2003, at First Immanuel Lutheran Church in San Jose. Graveside services will be at 1:00 p.m. Friday, November 28, 2003, at Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery in Lewisville with the Rev. Robert Trueblood officiating. Mr. Weigel died Friday, November 21, 2003, in San Jose, California. Visitation will be from 12 noon to 1:00 p.m. Friday, at Olson-Zaharia Funeral Home in Truman before the graveside service. Herbert E. Weigel was born May 15, 1915 on a farm near Danube, Minnesota, the fourth of eight children. Mr. Weigel attended Dr. Martin Lutheran College in New Ulm, Minnesota and later taught in a one-room schoolhouse near Danube. He entered the Army Air Corps during World War II serving in counter intelligence in Europe. On September 22, 1940, she was united in marriage to Alma L. Flitter, also the fourth of eight children. Following his honorable discharge from the service, Herb worked for Flitter Hardware in Lewisville, Minnesota, doing plumbing, heating and electrical installations and repairs. The couple moved to California in 1958 for Herb's health following a major industrial accident and years of reconstructive surgery. He began work in San Jose at Orchard Supply Hardware in 1960. He eventually became general manager of the main store on San Carlos Street and later was instrumental in the layout of the new Sunnyvale and Branham Lane stores, both of which he subsequently managed. Finally, as Vice President of Store Operations, he supervised the manager of all 33 stores that were in the Orchard Supply Hardware chain. After mandatory retirement from Orchard at age 65, Mr. Weigel continued to be active in First Immanuel Lutheran Church, where he served as business manager for 23 years. Herb and Alma enjoyed leisure travel to 18 countries in North America, South America and Europe, as well as to most states west of the Mississippi and some east of the river. He is survived by his wife, Alma of San Jose, California; a son, Charles Weigel of Sacramento, California; sisters, Hulda Gilbert of Renville, Minnesota and Elsie Weigel of Danube, Minnesota; brother-in-law, three sisters-in-law and twenty nieces and nephews.
